Portrait of the Artist
ALEXANDER NGUYEN
OLBRYS
Written by Mrs. Olbrys, Ocotober 2010
Alexander prefers to be called Alex or Al instead of
Alexander. He is 21 years old and has autism. Because of
autism, Alex does not talk like a regular 21 year old. He is
a post secondary student at Jardon in Hazel Park, where
he learns life skills.
Alex likes to draw and paint. Drawing and painting come
naturally to him. He is always busy and he likes to express
himself through colors and his paintings. One can say that
his paintings show his personality, which is happy. Alex
learned how to draw and paint when he was 7 with many
teachers but the most noted is Mrs. Ilham Mafouz who is
an artist of her own merit. She introduced to him big
canvases, strong colors and abstract art. He also has
learned from Ms. Katie, at The Art Experience, the skill of
reproducing pictures or anything in sight. Alex is learning
how to make frames from his father who is very adroit
with his hands. Alex then makes his own frames for his
art.
Alex has many other interests as well. He participates in
Special Olympics and competes in various events. He
swims with Angel Finns, kicks a ball on the soccer field
with the Rochester Rockers, hits a puck into the net with
the infamous Michigan Far Flyers, drops a basket with the
Jardon Dragons, bowls with the Wolverines etc.. to name
a few.
Alex also works at the pottery wheel every Saturday at
the Pontiac Arts Center. It was a challenge for him but he
is able to produce some nice bowls. For a hobby, Alex
loves to fish but has not had too much luck there!
